Bed Sheets: Conceit

In literature, a conceit is an extended metaphor with a complex logic that governs a poetic passage or entire poem. By juxtaposing, usurping and manipulating images and ideas in surprising ways, a conceit invites the reader into a more sophisticated understanding of an object of comparison....

Single white bed sheets,
stained red,
odors causing nausea,
down cover no longer needed,
gray hair on the pillow,
left the bed sheets crumpled,
and unmade.

No longer warm,
still and unused,
bed sheets that cradled sweat dreams
and harbored nightmares.

No longer able to dream,
holding their owner til darkness recedes,
and the darkness with the white gloves,
gray face mask and red cross arrives.
